Hakone and Fuji can mean views, onsen, nature, ryokan or fun transport. With children, decide which one matters most.
When a day trip is enough
A day trip from Tokyo can work for older children, light luggage and realistic expectations. Pick a few stops rather than the whole area.
When overnight is better
Overnight is better for onsen, ryokan dinner, slower pacing and weather margin.
Hakone or Fuji Five Lakes
Hakone is usually easier for a first family trip. Fuji Five Lakes can be stronger for views but is more weather-dependent.
Luggage matters
Send large bags ahead if Hakone sits between Tokyo and Kyoto.
