Teenagers do not need a children's itinerary
Japan often works very well with teenagers, but not if the trip is planned like a younger family trip. Teenagers need more personal rhythm, more choice and fewer days driven entirely by adult sightseeing lists.
Choose cities with different energy
Tokyo gives range: shopping, games, food, fashion, technology and neighborhoods to explore. Osaka adds food and evening energy. Kyoto adds contrast, but should be selective.
Build in choice
Choice can be simple: two lunch options, time to stay longer in one area, or an afternoon shaped by shopping, museum time or rest.
Avoid overmanaged culture days
Temples and older areas can work, but they need the right dose. Fewer strong stops are better than too many similar ones.
When to get personal help
Personal planning is useful if the family has different interests, if teenagers want some independence, or if the route combines several cities and side trips.
