About this place

Tadao Ando designed The Shinmonzen for a stretch of the Shirakawa canal in Gion, and the juxtaposition is striking: his signature exposed concrete against centuries-old wooden machiya townhouses. The building is deliberately understated from the street — a narrow entrance that opens into a gallery-like interior of concrete, glass, and water. There are only nine suites, each with Ando's characteristic play of light and shadow. Artworks by Sugimoto, Nara, and other contemporary Japanese artists line the corridors. The canal-side rooms look out onto cherry trees and the stone bridges of Gion's quietest corner. For anyone who appreciates the Scandinavian tradition of architecture as art — Juul, Utzon, Fehn — Ando's work here will resonate. It's a building where the structure itself is the design statement, and the art collection elevates it further.
